A choice that comes to everyone
Computing can become a great career choice. There comes a time when everyone has to make a choice of the career that they will be doing for the rest of their lives. In fact I am getting way ahead of myself. It is no longer possible to claim that you are going to have a career for life. People continue to be very flexible in their working patterns and will change jobs at a drop of a hat if they believe that there are better opportunities elsewhere. Computing is one of those career prospects that are quite amenable to the reality of changing priorities and cultures within the business environment.

Computing Technology

That fact that the skill of computing is portable means that most employers are very happy to consider candidates who have a proven experience of working with computers. In fact there are some jobs which will simply not interview candidates who cannot demonstrate basic computer skills. So if you are that career person who thinks that you can neglect the computing aspect of your skills set then I have to inform you that your choices in the job market will be somewhat restricted.

There is nowhere to hide
You might think that if you take a managerial job and have all the power in your office, it will be up to you to decide the policy on the need for computing skills. You might say that it is possible to excuse yourself from the computing aspect of the job description. The only problem with this kind of thinking is that there is a modern expectation that bosses have to lead the way in computer technology.

Computing Insight

Those senior managers who stubbornly refuse to take up the mantra of computing will be left on the wayside. It does not do your career any favors if you are perceived as being old fashioned or inflexible. Computing is an essential skill if you are trying to build a long term career. Knowing the basics of your profession is no longer enough. You need to have the skills to be able to apply that knowledge in the context of the current world that we live in. The importance of computing skills cannot be over emphasized.

What if you missed the boat and believe that you are too old to learn computing? You are really never too old to learn computing. Even the geriatric bracket will be able to use a computer because it does not demand a lot of physical exertion. Your intellect is not that important because you can learn at your own pace. It will be particularly impressive to a prospective employer if you can show them that you have been able to undertake your computing course in response to changes in the market. This shows that you have initiative and drive. It also shows that you are willing to develop yourself in order to build up a strategy for increasing your employment chances. This can help to set you apart from the other candidates and could ultimately mean that you win the job before them.
